DIABETIC RETINOPATHY

The alarm bells are already ringing, the data suggest that in 1999 Indian had almost 20 million diabetic patient which is due to increase exponentially and become about 70 million by about 2025 highest in the world. Review of various data suggest that

• About 1/3rd to 1/4th of all diabetic mellitus patients have diabetic retinopathy
• Moreover out of all patient with diabetic retiopathy 1/3rd have vision threatening diabetic retinopathy which requires either laser or surgical treatment , if not treated at proper time can lead to partial or complete blindness.
• Diabetic retionopathy often has no early warning signs. It is detected during an eye examination which includes retinal evalutaion . Should your doctor suspect that you need treatment, he or she may ask you to undergo speacial tests .
• There are two treatment for diabetic retinopathy : Laser photocoagulation and a surgery called vitrectomy. Periocular / intravitreal steroids or anti VEGF injection – given inside or outside the eye help to enhance the effect of both medical and surgical treatments.

Age Related Macular Degerenation (AMD)

Its a disease of old age and as life expectancy in India is increasing it is affecting more and more people every day. There are two types of AMD “dry”and “wet” type of AMD however the wet type though less prevalent is more blinding. Few years before treatment option for it was scare and not very effective also. However since past half a decade newer lasers, Anti – VEGF drugs (intraocular injections) and adjunctive surgery have changed the whole paradigm of treatment.

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP)

t occurs in infants that are born too premature. The blood vessels of the retina (in the back of the eye) begin to develop about 3 months into pregnancy. In most cases, they are fully developed at the time of normal birth. The eyes may not develop properly if a baby is born very early. The vessels may stop growing or grow abnormally from the retina into the back of the eye. Because the vessels are fragile, they can leak and cause bleeding in the eye. Early treatment has been shown to improve a baby's chances for normal vision.

• Laser therapy (photocoagulation) may be used to prevent complications of advanced ROP.
